Victor Serge wrote nine novels, of which seven survive. He also wrote four short stories and a number of poems, many of them reconstructed from memory after the originals were confiscated at the Russian border in 1936

"My inclinations have always been towards intellectual work. Probably my books have been my dearest love, but I have written much less than I would have wished, and then hastily, without opportunity to revise, in the thick of struggle."
